Aunt Janice’s Addictive Onion Dip

I am warning you now that Aunt Janice’s Addictive Onion Dip will become an obsession!

The four ingredients that combine to make this easy, dreamy and creamy concoction are probably all in your kitchen already. Cream cheese, mayonnaise, milk, and sweet onion. The key step that transforms this mixture is using a hand mixer to make it light and fluffy. Your chips simply glide into this onion dip, scooping up an obscene amount. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Back Story of Aunt Janice’s Addictive Onion Dip

My dear aunt Janice, God rest her soul, was a great cook. She honed her skills as a commercial cook feeding hungry workers at the Presto appliance factory in my hometown of Eau Claire, WI. She also lavished her immediate and extended family with her delicious comfort food. At almost every family gathering, Janice’s onion dip could be fond, circled by the hoards. We would literally test the strength of the chips to see just how much of this addictive dip they would hold.  The bonus – it’s uber easy!

Author: Adapted from Aunt Janice’s Onion Dip

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature
  • 1/3 cup mayo I use Hellmann’s Light – don’t use salad dressing for heaven’s sake!
  • 1-2 tablespoon milk
  • 2-3 teaspoon grated sweet onion

Instructions

  • Beat room temperature cream cheese and milk with hand mixer until thinned. Add mayo and beat until well combined. The key to this dip is to create a lighter and creamy dip that you can actually plow a potato chip through.
  • Add grated onion and beat until combined. Note – if you have never grated an onion, do not be alarmed when what you end up with is a little puddle of onion pulp and liquid. That’s exactly what you want for this recipe. Do also take the time to seek out a sweet onion. Most larger grocery stores stock them year round these days. Other onions impart too strong of a flavor.
  • Refrigerate for several hours so flavors can blend.
