Our book club has morphed over the years into an intimate group of gals, which makes up for its small size, through the liveliness of our discussion. First, let me set the record straight, by saying we were all still friends when the evening came to a close. However, there were some tense moments. While there were no actual fisticuffs, there was conviction in differing viewpoints. All this drama, even before we started the actual book discussion!
Seriously, what I love about an evening with my wonderful book club girlfriends, is their passion and intellect, which is matched by their humor and warmth. Over our meal of Chicken Coq au Vin and Orange & Fennel Salad, a lively debate erupted. The topic – personal reasons for eating certain types of protein. The catalyst – bacon in the stew. While there were differences of opinion, we all gained new insight into what drives personal motivation for what people eat. Fortunately, I was able to smooth things over with a rich, yet petit offering of chocolate mousse at the end of the meal. There’s nothing like chocolate to sooth the savage book club!
The book we discussed for the evening was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This is the 2nd book we’ve read by this author, which we found to be as amazing as his first book – Kite Runner. While A Thousand Splendid Suns is a heartbreaking story at times, it is also redemptive and made for a great discussion. We all agreed, that we were profoundly thankful for being women in the United States v.s. women in a country where basic human rights are not a given. It *was* a lively discussion–I can vouch for that! It was also an exquisite meal. Agreed with Kay; Cathy is a lovely hostess, and this is a fun group of ladies!

As usual Cathy served Book Club a glorious meal which was topped off by lively discussion. The food presentation, the table decor, the wine all added to the most pleasant experience. Cathy is the ideal hostess making everyone feel comfortable and happy to be in her home. She has a knack at making things look effortless as she creates and serves up her wonderful feast! I feel blessed to have Cathy in my life as a friend and cook!
